HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution - 1910 - Adopt Sesquicentennial Anniversary Committee Master Plan - 01/10/1985MH:js RESOLUTION Resolution #1910 Agenda Item #6 January'`10, 1985 A RESOLUTION ADOPTING THE OFFICIAL MASTER PLAN SUBMITTED BY THE LUBBOCK SESQUICENTENNIAL COMMITTEE FOR THE COMMEMORATION OF THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE STATE OF TEXAS. WHEREAS, the year of 1986 marks the Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the State of Texas; and WHEREAS, a Lubbock Sesquicentennial Committee has been formed to prepare for this event; and WHEREAS, a Master Plan has been duly developed and drafted by the Lubbock Sesquicentennial Committee for the observance of this anniversary; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Lubbock, Texas, supports the objectives, projects and goals of the Committee as detailed in the Master Plan; NOW THEREFORE: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK: SECTION 1. THAT the Lubbock Sesquicentennial Committee is offici- ally approved and that the 1986 Sesquicentennial Master Plan is adopted in order that the event may be appropriately commemorated in the City of Lubbock, Texas; and SECTION 2. City Attorney PURPOSE 1. To increase the awareness and appreciation of local and state heritage in the City of Lubbock; 2. To involve all citizens of Lubbock in the spirit of the celebration of Texas' 150th birthday and to encourage community and state pride. SESQUICENTENNIAL COMMITTEE MEMBERS David Murrah, Chairman 2207 16th Lubbock, TX 79401 Chairman of the Lubbock Sesquicentennial Committee, Dr. Murrah is the Director of the Southwest Collection, a regional archival repository at Texas Tech University. He has a Ph.D. in History, and is a member of the Lubbock Heritage Society, the West Texas Museum Association, the Texas State Historical Association, and is the past president of the Society of Southwest Archivists. Dr. Murrah is also serving on the City of Lubbock 2005 Committee. Kirt E. Anderson Pastor, First Presbyterian Church P.O. Box 69 Lubbock, TX 79401 Anderson completed a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of California at Santa Barbara and then received his Masters of Divinity from the Princeton Theological Seminary. Currently, he is the Pastor at the First Presbyterian Church. Alwyn Barr 3215 53rd Street Lubbock, TX 79413 Dr. Barr is a History Professor at Texas Tech University with a Ph.D from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a member of the Executive Council of the Texas State Historical Association and a member of the Lubbock County Historical Commission and First Methodist Church. Shelly Fischer P.O. Box 4177 Texas Tech University Lubbock, TX 79409 Ms. Fischer is a Texas Tech student and represents the Student Association on the Sesquicentennial Committee. Mary Alice Fulton 3313 19th Street Lubbock, TX 79410 Mrs. Fulton completed a Bachelor of Science degree at Texas Tech University in Education. She is a member of the West Texas. Museum Association, the Lubbock Women's Club, and a Chapter advisor for a sorority at Texas Tech. Rick Gilbert P.O. Box 2369 Lubbock, TX 79408 Gilbert is the News Director for KSEL Radio and a news reporter for KCBD T.V. He is a member of the Easter Seal Society of Lubbock board and is the annual host for the Easter Seal Telethon. He has worked with the March of Dimes on various activities, worked as a planner for Buddy Holly Week, and served on a special interest committee supporting a proposition allowing the city to lease the mineral rights underlying park land. Lawrence L. Graves 4514 8th Street Lubbock, TX 79416 Dr. Graves is the Senior Editor for the Handbook of Texas project. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, and is Emeritus Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He is a member of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, and various history and professional organizations, and is editor of the History of Lubbock. Lucille S. Graves 1834 24th Street Lubbock, TX 79411 Dr. Graves is the principal of the Mary & Mac Private School. Robert A. Hayes 8008 Quinton Lubbock, TX 79424 Dr. Hayes received a Ph.D. in History from the University of New Mexico and is a History Professor at Texas Tech University. He has served as a guest speaker on modern Latin America to various civic groups and is a member of the Rocky Mountain Council for Latin American Studies, the American Historical Association, and the Latin American Studies Association, and First Baptist Church. Charlene M. Key 4901 80th Street Lubbock, TX 79424 Mrs. Key is a facility consultant to Petro Lewis Corporation. She also serves on the Childrens' Area Committee for the Lubbock Arts Festival, is a Y.W.C.A. board member, and is currently the Treasurer for the Lubbock Symphony Guild. James W. Kitchen 5225 14th Street Lubbock, TX 79416 Dr. Kitchen is a professor in Park Administration at Texas Tech University. He received his Ph.D. from Texas A. & M. University. He is a member of the Downtown Rotary Club, the Texas River Recreation Association, the Nature Conservancy, and Past President of the Texas Recreation and Park Society. Dolores Martinez 5520 58th Street 4153 Lubbock, TX 79414 Ms. Martinez completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Texas Tech University and is an instructor in Art at Christ the King School. Ms. Martinez is a member of the Hispanic Association of Women, teaches CCE at church, and enjoys working with children. Kenneth May Lubbock Avalanche -Journal P.O. Box 491 Lubbock, TX 79408 May completed his education at North Texas State University and is the Associate Editor of the Avalanche -Journal. He is a member of the Food & Fiber National Institute of Achievement, the West Texas Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Lubbock 2005 Committee. Councilman Bob Nash City of Lubbock P.O. Box 2000 Lubbock, TX 79457 Nash is the President/General Manager of McAlister Television Enterprises, Inc. and serves on the Lubbock City Council. He is a member of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Board of City D6velopment, President of the Lubbock Lake Site Development Corporation, a member of Civic Lubbock, Inc., the Steering Committee for All American Game, Past President of Lubbock Rotary Club, and Pa-st First Vice - President of the Lubbock Advertising Federation. Weston A. Pettey 3001 32nd Street Lubbock, TX 79410 Dr. Pettey has an O.D. degree from Southern California College of Optometry. He is a member of the Lions Club, a Camera Club, Llano Estacado Corral of Westerners International, and various historical and professional organizations. His civic involvement includes work with Goodwill Industries, South Plains Health Systems, and the Day.Care Association. Jessie Rangel 516 55th Street Lubbock, TX 79404 Rangel is the Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions for Texas Tech University. He is a Board Member of the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education and the Intercultural Development Research Association. He is also the chairperson of the LISD Hispanic Advisory Committee and is involved in various other civic activities. He is a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Dorothy Rylander 2125 52nd Street Lubbock, TX 79413 Miss Rylander has a Masters degree in History from Texas Tech University. She is involved in various civic organizations including the Lubbock Heritage Society, the South Plains Genealogical Society, the West Texas Scottish Heritage Society, the West Texas Museum Association, and the Ranching Heritage Association. Lorenzo M. Sedeno Sr. 408 Vanda Lubbock, TX 79403 Sedeno is associated with and Veteran Land Board. He Patrick Men's Society and Joyce U. Shuman 4903 19th Street Lubbock, TX 79407 the Austin -based Veteran Outreach is also a member of the St. serves on the Parish Council. Mrs. Shuman is a housewife and part owner of Serendipity Tours of Lubbock. She is a Board Member of the Crippled Childrens Committee, the Family Service Association, and Sherick Home. She is also a member of the Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce, the Lubbock Heritage Society.and the Women's Museum Council. Betty Wheeler Executive Director, Y.W.C.A. 3101 35th Lubbock, TX 79413 Mrs. Wheeler is the Executive Director of the YWCA of Lubbock. She completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology at Texas Tech University. She is a member of the Junior League, the Symphony Guild, the Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce, the Lubbock Heritage Society, the West Texas Museum Association, the Ranching Heritage Association, and the Cultural Affairs Council. George C. Woods 2202 Date Avenue Lubbock, TX 79404 Woods, a prominent member of Lubbock's black community, is ill and unable to provide biographical information at this time.
