RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, chemical dependency, drug trafficking and drug-related
crime have become a national blight; and
WHEREAS, as a consequence of the drug-related tragedy which
occurred earlier this year in Matamoros, Mexico, friends of former
University of Texas student Mark Kilroy have formed a coalition with
other drug abuse opponents to demand an effective federal response to
this pernicious criminal and health problem; and
WHEREAS, in connection with this objective, the coalition's grass
roots organization, entitled Make a Responsible Kommitment (M.A.R.K.),
has adopted a goal of obtaining five million letters in support of
resolute action at the federal level to combat the nationwide problem
of drug trafficking and drug abuse; and
WHEREAS, the 71st Legislature of the State of Texas commended and
endorsed the campaign of M.A.R.K. by adopting House Concurrent Resolu-
tion No. 290 earlier this year; NOW THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK:
SECTION 1. THAT the City Council of the City of Lubbock hereby
concurs with the Texas Legislature and supports the efforts of M.A.R.K.
which are intended to evoke an effective response by the Federal
Government to the nation's pervasive drug problem.
SECTION 2. THAT the City Council of the City of Lubbock hereby
encourages all Lubbock citizens to assist M.A.R.K. by writing letters
to that organization in support of and urging effective federal
measures to combat the country's drug problem.
