HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution - 4643 - Prohibits The Use Of Light Trucks/Pickups Cargo Areas As Passenger Areas - 10/20/1994Resolution No. 4643 October 20, 1994 Item #15 RESOLUTION WHEREAS, the latest statistics from the Fatal Accident Reporting System of the National highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show an increase in life threatening and permanent injuries and fatalities attributable to children riding in the cargo areas of light trucks/pickups; and WHEREAS, the Citizens Traffic Commission of the City of Lubbock, Texas, has urged the City Council of the City of Lubbock to support the enactment of federal and state legislation to prohibit children being allowed to ride in the cargo areas of light trucks/pickup trucks; and WHEREAS, the Citizens Traffic Commission also urges that all concerned public and private organizations work to implement educational programs addressing the danger to children posed by riding in the cargo areas of light trucks/pickups; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Lubbock finds it to be in the best interest of the citizens of the City of Lubbock to promote traffic safety for children by supporting legislative amendments and educational programs to prohibit children from riding in the cargo areas of light trucks/pickups; NOW THEREFORE: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK: SECTION 1. THAT the City of Lubbock hereby endorses and supports cooperative efforts by all interested public and private organizations to alert the public to the dangers posed to children by allowing them to ride in the cargo area of a light truck/pickup; and SECTION 2. THAT the City of Lubbock hereby endorses and supports the enactment of legislation prohibiting the use of the cargo area of light trucks/pickups as a passenger area.
