RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, on July 13, 2005, Texas Tech University was invited by Messrs.
Marvin P. Bush and Donald L. Evans, co-chairs of the site selection committee for the
George W. Bush Presidential Library (the "Library"), to submit a proposal to host the
Library; and
WHEREAS, on July 20, 2005, the Texas Tech University Board of Regents stated
their support of such a proposal and, further on August 12, 2005, pledged to develop the
academic programming, donate the land for the Library complex and, in conjunction with
the George W. Bush Presidential Library Foundation, manage the endowments necessary
to support the Library; and
WHEREAS, the West Texas Coalition for the George W. Bush Presidential
Library was created to lead the fund raising and public relations efforts for the Library;
and
WHEREAS, the West Texas Coalition has determined the need to add public
funding from the City of Lubbock to the private funding pledged in order to demonstrate
the strong and unyielding support for the Library should Texas Tech University be
selected as the host for the Library; and
WHEREAS, the Library will significantly and positively impact both the
economic and cultural landscapes of the City of Lubbock and benefit the citizens of
Lubbock and all of West Texas; and
WHEREAS, the City of Lubbock desires to join Texas Tech University, the West
Texas Coalition, and all the citizens of West Texas in paying tribute to the legacy of
President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Welch Bush and to further expand
freedom, liberty and democracy around the globe, NOW THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK:
THAT the City Council of the City of Lubbock does hereby agree to give support,
including financial support in the amount of $50 million dollars and other support that the
City Council finds is in the best interest of the citizens of the City of Lubbock, to bring
the George W. Bush Library to the City of Lubbock, Texas.
