Department of Defense has announced that Cannon Air Force Base is on the list of recommended base closures for the Base Realignment and Closure Commission to consider; and WHEREAS, if approved by Congress and President Bush, a Cannon closure would mean a loss of about 9,000 military personnel and family members from the region; and WHEREAS, closure of Cannon would have a negative economic impact throughout the Lubbock and West Texas region; and WHEREAS, early conservative estimates indicate that Lubbock's economy, including the medical community, automobile dealerships, lodging, restaurants, special events and retailers, could suffer a $500,000 per month decline as a result of a closure; and WHEREAS, due to its economic impact on Lubbock and West Texas, closure of Cannon Air Force Base would effectively be the second base closure for Lubbock and West Texas, coming less than 10 years since the closure of Reese Air Force Base in 1997; and WHEREAS, the City Council desires to express its support for the efforts to prevent the closure of Cannon Air Force Base; NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK: THAT the City Council supports efforts to prevent the closure of Cannon Air Force Base and further urges the Defense Department to remove Cannon Air Force Base from its list of planned base closures. Passed by the City Council this 9th day of JWe / 2005. ATTEST: Re ecca Garza, City Secretar 1cfCityAtt/Linda/Resolutions/Cannon AFB June 3, 2005 MCDOUGAL, MAYOR APPROVED AS TO FORM: Linda L.
