RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the Can -Am Police -Fire Games Federation (the "Federation")
organizes biennial competitions among police officers, fire fighters, other emergency
responders, and protective services as a way to promote camaraderie, physical fitness,
and goodwill among and between members of these public service entities, and further to
showcase the tremendous talent serving the citizens of both Canada and the United States
of America; and
WHEREAS, the Federation is presently accepting applications from communities
wishing to host the 2020 Can -Am Police -Fire Games (the "2020 Games"); and
WHEREAS, the City of Lubbock and Lubbock County is home to an abundance
of modern, first-class venues suitable for hosting sporting events such as the 2020
Games, including premier sports facilities on the campuses of Texas Tech University and
Lubbock Christian University, as well as throughout the Lubbock, Frenship, and
Lubbock -Cooper Independent School Districts; and
WHEREAS, the City of Lubbock is home to burgeoning hotel and restaurant
industries, regularly hosting an influx of thousands of out-of-town visitors to Texas Tech
University sporting events and graduation ceremonies; and
WHEREAS, the City of Lubbock eagerly supports its local first responders, and
recently collaborated with Lubbock County to provide financial support for the
construction of the Lubbock Regional Public Safety Memorial in a south Lubbock Park;
and
WHEREAS, the friendly people of West Texas work together for the common
good, and the City of Lubbock can count on the cooperation of Texas Tech, the area
school districts and the surrounding communities to help make this a first class
experience for all of the athletes and their families that attend the games; and
WHEREAS, the City of Lubbock is proud to offer visitors vibrant live music
entertainment, abundant dining and entertainment possibilities ranging from the familiar
to local hidden treasures, a well-maintained park system, family -friendly museums and
other recreational venues, and a sunny Texas outdoor summer climate that is second to
none
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
LUBBOCK, TEXAS:
THAT the City of Lubbock, by and through its City Council, does hereby
encourage the Federation to consider Lubbock, Texas to host the 2020 Can -Am Police -
Fire Games.
