ITEM#/SUBJECT:
# Consider a resolution to fund the Demolition of Substandard Accessory Buildings
project $30,000 in order to abate the presence of certain substandard and
dilapidated accessory building throughout the City of Lubbock.
BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION:
City staff estimates 275 -plus hazardous/dilapidated accessory buildings exists in
the city's residential community. These buildings are non-residential structures
and create blight in the neighborhood.
Staff recommends a pilot program that will demolish 50 substandard accessory
buildings during the next six months. The estimated total cost of this program
will be $30,000 for an average cost of $600 per structure. The intent will be to
allocate $30,000 from the demolition account (#5401.9132.30000). The City
would perform the service with the owner's permission, no cost to the property
owner, and no liens filed against the property. To implement this project, the
Council will need to identify the project as a public benefit to the community
through a Resolution.
SUMMARY/RECOMMENDATION:
This program proposal has been reviewed by the Business and Neighborhood
Development staff as well as the Legal Department. The Structural Standards
Committee voted unanimously in support of this project. Staff recommends the
approval of this resolution.
