HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution - 2002-R0062 - Arts Alliance Award By Lubbock Arts Alliance Grants Review Committee - 02/14/2002Resolution No. 2002-R0062 February 14, 2002 Item No. 20 RESOLUTION BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK: THAT the City Council of the City of Lubbock hereby authorized and approves for and on behalf of the City of Lubbock, the Arts Alliance to award all of the second period grants for 2002 recommended by the Lubbock Arts Alliance Grants Review Committee. The list of grantees and amounts recommended by the Lubbock Arts Alliance for the second period grants is attached hereto and incorporated in this Resolution as if fully set forth herein and shall be included in the minutes of the Council. Grant # 0112-007 Lubbock Community Theater Cinderella Request: $2,500 Recommendation: $2,500 Comments: • Good collaboration with South Plains Children's Shelter, etc. • Committee recommends exploring the possibility of publicizing to children through public schools and community centers Grant # 0112-008 Texas Tech University Dept. of Theater and Dance Summer Rep, production of Baby Request: $5,000 Recommendation: $4,000 Comments: • One committee member recused • Committee suggests funds not be used for publicity • New schedule includes two musicals, increased other costs Grants Review Committee Comments Applications - June 2001 Grant # 0112-009 Dept. of Education, Office of International Affairs Artists Group Residencies Request: $455 Recommendation: $455 Comments: • Will serve a large number of people • Diverse funding sources • Request is minimal for program Grant # 0112-010 W. Texas Native American Association Annual Powwow Request: $4,500 Recommendation: $4,000 Comments: • Need to seek more corporate and individual funding • Brings a large number of people into Lubbock • Important aspect of area's heritage Grant # 0112-011 Landmark Arts Gallery Artist Residency and Exhibitions Request: $8,000 Recommendation: $4,500 Comments: • One committee member recused • Rated high on artistic merit • Artists are of high quality • Cost per person is somewhat high • Committee likes workshops and activities for children Grant # 0112-012 International Cultural Center Gateway To The World, International Week Request: $2,636 Recommendation: $2,000 Comments: • Program appears to be growing • Serves a lot of people, but probably low on tourism • Committee feels it is important to publicize to general public Grants Review Committee Comments Applications - June 2001 Grant # 0112-013 KOHM-FM Art (Votes Request: $2,000 Recommendation: $1,500 I- I or 117, • Committee likes idea of this program • Committee would like to see it, or another program, include performing arts • Innovative Grant # 0112-014 Science Spectrum, On The Brazos Family Concert Series Request: $1,500 Recommendation: $1,500 Comments: • Committee feels this organization does a good job at growing and looking for innovative programs • Lots of concerts in series • Free to the public, highlights local and area artists Grant # 0112-015 Daughters of the Republic of Texas Texas Independence Day Celebration Request: $500 Recommendation: $500 Comments: • Good idea -need celebration for this day • Take program out to community, possibility to community centers or schools • Idea has great potential Grants Review Committee Comments Applications - June 2001 Grant # 0112-016 Lubbock Symphony Orchestra Family Day Request: $10,000 Recommendation: $2,000 Comments: • Cost per person served in very high • Committee likes the idea • Rated low on accessibility due to the cost for a family to attend • Committee suggests looking at another venue with larger seating capacity so tickets prices can be lowered, or some way to make some lower priced tickets available Grant # 0112-017 Ranching Heritage Association Vaqueros: A Vanishing Tradition Request: $6,800 Recommendation: $5,000 Comments: • Exhibit runs a long time • Committee likes the concept • Request is reasonable • Rated low on artistic merit, without seeing examples Grant # 0112-018 Lubbock Centro Aztlan/Ballet Folklorico Aztlan de Lubbock Viva Azdan Festival Request: $7,000 Recommendation: $5,000 Comments: • Quality of submitted grants continues to improve • Committee'likes scholarship aspect of program • Event is well attended • Need to search out additional corporate funding • Brings in people to Lubbock Grants Review Committee Comments Applications - June 2001 Grant # 0112-019 Museum of Texas Tech University Public Education program for Vatican Exhibit Request: $8,000 Recommendation: $2,250 Comments: • Committee felt the proposal was weak • Committee questioned why the artist who will do the residencies is not a fresco painter. • Committee supports outreach in schools for Vatican Exhibit Grant # 0112-020 Vatican Exhibit Foundation Vatican Exhibit Request: $12,000 Recommendation: $12,000 Comments: • Rated very high on tourism • Committee feels this is a wonderful opportunity for Lubbock + Widely varies sources of support and funding
