RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, a granite monument depicting the Ten Commandments has stood
on the Texas Capitol Grounds for over four decades; and
WHEREAS, the monument is a part of an outdoor museum on the Capital
Grounds which have been listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and
designated as a protected National Historic Landmark; and
WHEREAS, a lawsuit, which is being heard by the United States Supreme
Court, has been filed against the Governor of the State of Texas demanding the removal
of the monument from the lawn behind the Capitol; and
WHEREAS, The City Council of the City of Lubbock supports freedom of
religion and recognizes the substantial contribution of the Ten Commandments to the
development of Western civilization and legal codes as well as the indisputable and
significant secular impact on our history and culture; and
WHEREAS, the City Council desires to express its support for the efforts of
Attorney General Greg Abbott in defending the constitutionality of retaining the
monument depicting the Ten Commandments on the Capital grounds; NOW
THEREFORE,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK:
THAT the City Council supports Attorney General Greg Abbott in his efforts to
retain the four decade old monument bearing the Ten Commandments on the Texas
Capitol Grounds.
