HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution - 2004-R0535 - Resolution Renaming Park - Roy Furr Pioneer Park - 10/28/2004Resolution No. 2004-RO535 October 28, 2004 RESOLUTION Item No. 30 WHEREAS, on May 25, 2004, the City Council of the City of Lubbock established the Roy Furr Honor Committee in order to explore the best options to honor and celebrate the life of Roy Furr; and WHEREAS, the Roy Furr Honor Committee presented a proposal to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee to change the name of Pioneer Park to Roy Furr Pioneer Park; and WHEREAS, Section 2-259 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Lubbock requires the Parks and Recreation Board to submit recommendations to the City Council with regard to the naming of park facilities; and WHEREAS, the Parks and Recreation Board set the following criteria for the candidates: 1. The person can be deceased or living. 2. The person will have made a significant contribution to the community (land, time, money, programs, etc.) 3. The name should have regional or cultural significance. 4. The name should be important to community. 5. The park could be named after the subdivision in which it is located and a lake could be named after a park that it is adjacent to; and WHEREAS, the Parks and Recreation Board reviewed the history of the park at issue and has submitted its recommendations to the City Council for its approval; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Lubbock desires to name the following facility as set forth below in recognition of the historical significance of this area and to honor Roy Furr for his contributions to the City of Lubbock as set forth below; NOW THEREFORE: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK: THAT the Pioneer Park is hereby named Roy Furr Pioneer Park. Passed by the City Council this 28th day of October , 2004.
