HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution - 2004-R0404 - Resolution Changing City Map, Street Name Markers And Signs - 08/26/2004Resolution No. 2004-RO404
August 26, 2004
Item No. 20
RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the owners and tenants abutting the 4800 and 4900 blocks of
Homestead Avenue have requested that the City change the name of Homestead Avenue
to 50th Street, which request is attached hereto as Exhibit A; and
WHEREAS, whereas such change has been requested because 50th Street merges
into Homestead Avenue, which causes confusion to citizens, visitors and customers
trying to locate businesses on Homestead Avenue, especially in view of the recent street
closures due to the construction of Marsha Sharp Freeway; and
WHEREAS, Section 24-38(f) of the Code of Ordinances allows the changing of
street names to correct errors or omissions or to make necessary changes to bring street
names into compliance with the current method of street naming; and
WHEREAS, the City Engineer and the City Traffic Engineer have reviewed this
request and have determined that it is an acceptable request to correct a name that creates
a confusing situation for Lubbock citizens; NOW THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK:
SECTION 1. THAT, pursuant to Section 24-38(f) of the Code of Ordinances, the
4800 and 4900 blocks of Homestead Avenue are hereby changed to be the 5900 block of
50th Street in order to eliminate confusion and to help citizens, visitors and customers to
find addresses at that location.
SECTION 2. THAT the City Engineer is hereby directed to change the official
City Map to reflect this change and to notify all interested parties of such change. The
City Traffic Engineer is hereby directed to make changes to street name markers and
other signs as needed.

.Dear Mr. Hertel:
For many years the 4800-4900 block of Homestead Avenue, often called "never-never land"
have suffered. This has gotten worse over the last few
}ears with the leniency of zoning which
permits competitive uses to be built in many places in Lubbock. It has suffered more and
drastically the last six months with the traffic re-routing changes due to the Marsha Shar
Freeway. It will indeed get worse as that construction is completed. P
We need some assistance and relief involving that two -block area in South West Commercial
Park called Homestead Avenue. You will notice that there is not even a Homestead Avenue for
two and one-half miles to the north and a mile to the south. This is our request for you to chane
the name of the 4800-4900 block from Homestead Avenue to Fiftieth Street. It is actuall g
extension of Fiftieth Street to the northwest anyway. There are only four properties that would
need new addresses. They are:
A commercial Building
(10 Tenants) 4918-4920 Homestead Ave., owned by Allen Hatch
Pantechs Labs 4912 Homestead Ave., owned by Steve Holcomb
u. Office and Storage 4910 Homestead Ave., owned by Don L. Harris
Commercial Cleaning
and Storage 4908 Homestead Ave., owned by Don L. Harris
Rowe Plumbing 4902 Homestead Ave., owned by Bryan Rowe
The reasons for this change are logical. (1) There is no need for it to be Homestead Ave. when
50th Street traffic funnels into it and will even more so when the construction is
completed
with the highway changes. (2) The new traffic routes are a very sever handicap to our property
and tenants. (3) With the street name changed to 50"' Street, a more commonly known name, it
will be easier for our businesses to be located and in turn perhaps reverse some of the negative
aspects. We invite you to ride it and see our problem.
Your cooperation and assistance in this matter will help ensure a more logical and efficient street
name and property addresses. It will help four properties maintain instead of loose values. It
will help the 19 + businesses there improve their business, and that is economic development. It
will also make it more accessible to about 75 more tenants nearby.
Thank you.
Very Truly Yours,
Steve Holcomb
Allen Hatch
