HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution - 2003-R0348 - Resolution Expressing Approval Of Candlelight Ceremony - 08/28/2003Resolution No. 2003-80348 August 28, 2003 Item No. 62 RESOLUTION WHEREAS, American State Bank, partnering with the Lubbock Independent School District and the City of Lubbock, desire to honor and remember the victims of the 3,412 lives that were lost in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the United States with a candlelight ceremony to place United States flags for each victim on the evening of September 10, 2003, at Kastman Park; and WHEREAS, in addition, the role of first responders in the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack and every day in our local area will receive recognition and honor in a special ceremony at Kastman Park on the morning of September 11, 2003; and WHERERAS, the City Council of the City of Lubbock finds it to be in the public interest of the citizens of the City of Lubbock and a public purpose to support the special ceremonies remembering the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack on the United States and honoring the first responders of Lubbock and the surrounding area; NOW THEREFORE: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK: THAT the City Council of the City of Lubbock hereby expresses its approval and support for the proposed Candlelight Ceremony on September 10 at Kastman Park to honor and remember the 3,412 victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack against the United States and a special ceremony September 11 at Kastman park to honor the first responders of Lubbock and the surrounding area. One American flag will be placed in the park for each victim of the attack as the person's name is read. After the event, each of the flags will be available for purchase. Funds raised by flag sales will go to endow a nursing scholarship. The City Council hereby approves and authorizes a flyover as part of the ceremonies and the use of Kastman Park and City equipment, including four trolleys from Citibus, and staff in cooperation with American State Bank and Lubbock Independent School District in the planning and conduct of the Candlelight Ceremony and the First Responder's Ceremony on September 10 and 11, 2003.
