To Mac Davis Lane - 07/30/2004~~~First Reading July 30, 2004 Item No. 1 ORDINANCE NO. 2004-oo087 Second Reading August 16, 2004 Item No. 16 AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 24 OF THE CODE OF ORDINANCES OF THE CITYOF LUBBOCK, TEXAS, WITH REGARD TO CHANGING THE NAME OF 6TH STREET FROM TEXAS A VENUE TO UNIVERSITY A VENUE TO "MAC DAVIS LANE" AND DIRECTING THE CITY ! ENGINEER AND TRAFFIC ENGINEER TO INDICATE SUCH NAME ON OFFICIAL 1' MAPS AND TO INSTALL APPROPRIATE SIGNAGE TO REFLECT SUCH NAME AS NEEDED; PROVIDING A SAVINGS CLAUSE; AND PROVIDING FOR PUBLICATION. WHEREAS, Singer, songwriter and actor Mac Davis has been and continues to be Lubbock's face to the rest ofthe world due to his many successes in his chosen fields of endeavor; and WHEREAS, his successes include hitting No. 1 on the pop music charts with 1 "Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me," followed by other pop and country hits such as "Stop and Smell the Roses," "It's Hard to be Humble," "Texas in My Rear View Mirror," and "Hooked on Music;" and . WHEREAS, Mac Davis also wrote many successful hits for other singers, such as · "In the Ghetto," "Memories" and "Don't Cry Daddy'' for Elvis Presley, "Everything a Man Could Need" for Glen Campbell, "Something's Burning" for Kenny Rogers & The First Edition, "Watching Scotty Grow" for Bobby Goldsboro, and "I Believe in Music" for Gallery; and Ill WHEREAS, he also has had an acting career that included hosting and starring in his own musical variety show for NBC, roles in several movies, including ''North Dallas ~ Forty," "Cheaper to Keep Her," and the "Sting II," and the title role in the Broadway J Production of"The Will Rogers Follies;" and WHEREAS, Mac Davis continues to achieve successes in the entertainment business with many current and planned projects that will continue to reflect well on his many talents as well as on his home town of Lubbock, Texas; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Lubbock deems it to be appropriate to 1 honor Mac Davis by naming a street in the City of Lubbock in his honor; NOW THEREFORE: BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK: SECTION I. THAT the Code of Ordinances, City ofLubbock, Texas, is hereby amended by adding a section to be numbered 24-42, which said section reads as follows: I' 'I Sec. 24-42. Mac Davis Lane. The former 6th Street from Texas Avenue to University Avenue is hereby changed to be Mac Davis Lane. Said change is made as an exception to Section 24-38 of the Code of Ordinances in honor of singer, songwriter, actor and Lubbock native Mac Davis. SECTION 2. THAT the City Engineer and Traffic Engineer are hereby authorized and directed to update all official maps to recognize this designation and to prepare appropriate signage. SECTION 3. THAT should any paragraph, section, sentence, phrase, clause or word of this Ordinance be declared unconstitutional or invalid for any reason, the remainder of this Ordinance shall not be affected thereby. SECTION 4. THAT the City Secretary is hereby authorized and directed to cause publication of the descriptive caption of this Ordinance as an alternative method of publication as provided by law.
