HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution - 2006-R0229 - Adoption of the South Plains Hazard Mitigation Action Plan - 05_25_2006Resolution No. 2006-RO229 May 25, 2006 Item No. 5.4 RESOLUTION A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL FOR THE CITY OF LUBBOCK, TEXAS TO APPROVE THE REGIONAL MITIGATION ACTION PLAN (MAP) KNOWN AS THE "SOUTH PLAINS HAZARD MITIGATION ACTION PLAN". WHEREAS, hazard mitigation is defined as sustained actions taken to eliminate or reduce long-term risk to people and property from hazards and their effects; and WHEREAS, the goal of mitigation is to save lives and reduce damages to property, infrastructure, and the environment, and consequently to minimize the costs of disaster response and recovery activities; and WHEREAS, a hazard mitigation action plan is a community's dynamic record of its recognition that it is vulnerable and at risk from hazards, and represents a community's commitment to take the actions needed and implement specific mitigation strategies designed to reduce the community's long-term vulnerability, risk and exposure to adverse consequences resulting from hazards; and WHEREAS, the City of Lubbock, Texas has participated in the development of a regional hazard mitigation plan in the 15 county area of Texas known as the South Plains region through the development of the South Plains Hazard Mitigation Action Plan and has made the plan available for public inspection and review. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK: THAT the City Council of the City of Lubbock on behalf of the citizens of Lubbock, Texas, hereby approves and adopts a regional hazard mitigation action plan as required by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Texas Division of Emergency Management to remain eligible for federal disaster mitigation funding after the November 1, 2004, planning deadline.
