HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution - 2007-R0157 - Educational partnership between the Texas Tech University System and Angelo State University - 4/12/2007Resolution No. 2007-RO157 April. 12, 2007 item No. 6.1 W-MMM WHEREAS, State Senator Robert Duncan and State Representative Drew Darby recently filed companion bills in the 8oth Texas Legislature that would enable the transfer of Angelo State [JruversiLy ("ASU") from the Texas State Lhiiversity Systern to the Texas Tech University System ("TTU System")-, and WHEREAS, supporters of this move have initiated the Coalition for ASU to promote this effort; and WHEREAS, alignment with the TTU System will provide the synergies for ASU to grow and prosper in the coming years, while the inclusion of an additional four year university in the TTU Systern would be a giant step toward Texas Techs rightful recognition as the third Flagship Institution for the State of"I'exas; and WHEREAS, ASU and Texas Tech would benefit from numerous synergies related to natural ties between academic and research programs as well as common regional strengths, challenges and opportunities; and WHEREAS, this OPPOrtUnity to align ASU with the TTU System Would forge a tremendous educational partnership for both institutions and cornmUnitie," and make ASU as an extremely valuable; asset to the 1"M System and the Lubbock community while growing in value to West Texas and the rest, of the state; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Lubbock finds that it is in the best interest of the citizens of the City of Lubbock to advocate for tile advancement and growth of the TTLj System. NOWTHEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE ary OF LUBBOCK: THAT the C'lty COLIne if o,f the City of L,ubbock, Texas does hereby support efforts to align Angelo State Uriiversity with the Texas Tech University System and further supports State Senator Robert Duncan State Representative Drew Darby and the Coalition for ASU in their efforts to forge a tremendous educational partnership for both institutions and the communities of San Angelo and Lubbock.
