RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the Honorable Thomas James (T.J.) Patterson was a faithful public
servant to the citizens of Lubbock, Texas for his entire adult life; and
WHEREAS, T.J. Patterson co-founded the Southwest Digest, a weekly newspaper
focused on topics of particular interest to Lubbock's African -American community, and
Lubbock generally, giving local form, purpose, and effect to the cherished First
Amendment to the United States Constitution; and
WHEREAS, T.J. Patterson further made an indelible mark on his community by
and through his service on the Lubbock City Council as the first African -American elected
to that body, holding that position for twenty years, and for a term, Mayor Pro Tem; and
WHEREAS, T.J. Patterson, as a member of the City Council, was a voice of reason,
of compassion for the underprivileged among us, and a champion for his constituents,
working tirelessly to help those around him and lending a hand to advocate for those most
in need; and
WHEREAS, T.J. Patterson, perhaps most notably, put his faith into action when
every Christmas morning, he visited persons incarcerated at the Lubbock County Detention
Center, letting them know they had value, and that they were not forgotten; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Lubbock does, with deep gratitude,
hereby wish to honor the life, memory, and legacy of the Honorable Thomas James (T.J.)
Patterson by dedicating in his name the newly completed plaza at Citizens Tower, to
remind all who enter their seat of local government of his integrity, his sacrifice, his eternal
love for our great City, and his unending hope for the common good.
THEREFORE, be it resolved by the City Council of the City of Lubbock, Texas,
that from henceforth, the greenspace plaza southwardly adjacent to Citizens Tower shall
be known as:
"T.J. PATTERSON MEMORIAL PLAZA"
