RESOLUTION
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF A PRISON
FACILITY IN LUBBOCK COUNTY BY THE TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS.
WHEREAS, the City Council and the County Commissioner's Court partici-
pated in a joint meeting on May 11, 1989 to discuss and evaluate the feasi-
bility of applying to the Texas Department of Corrections for a prison
facility to be constructed and operated in Lubbock County; and
WHEREAS, the City Council and the County Commissioner's Court reached
a consensus that additional prison locations are important for the public
safety and economic well being of our State; and
WHEREAS, the City Council and the County Commissioner's Court jointly
agreed that Lubbock County should receive substantial economic benefits from
a prison being located in our County; and
WHEREAS, the City Council and the County Commissioner's Court have
agreed that the City and the County should jointly pursue a State operated
prison facility for our area for the purpose of creating new jobs and diver-
sification of the local economy; and
WHEREAS, the City Council and the County Commissioner's Court have
agreed to fully support the application for a 2,250 bed maximum security
unit and/or a 1,000 bed minimum security unit; and
WHEREAS, the City Council and the County Commissioner's Court have
jointly agreed to fully support the efforts by the Board of City Development
to secure a prison facility for Lubbock County; NOW THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK:
SECTION 1. THAT the Board of City Development BE directed to make ap-
plication to the Texas Department of Corrections for a prison facility in
Lubbock County.
SECTION 2. THAT the City and the County jointly, actively participate
in and support efforts to secure a prison facility for our County.
