A RESOLUTION CANVASSING THE RETURNS AND DECLARING THE RESULTS
OF THE SPECIAL CITY ELECTION HELD ON
JANUARY 19, 1980
BE IT REMEMBERED THAT on the 24th day of January, 1980, the City Council of
the City of Lubbock met at 9:30 o'clock A. M. in regular session at the
regular meeting place of the Council in the City Hall, in the City of Lubbock,
with the following members present, to -wit:

Mayor Pro Tem Alan Henry
Councilwoman Carolyn Jordan
Councilman M. J. Aderton
Councilman Bi l l McAls i ter

it is unanimously carried that the returns of the special City election, held
January 19, 1980, for the purpose of submitting to the qualified voters of the
City of;Lubbock for approval or rejection a proposal that the state law applicab
to "firefighters", which is Vernon's Ann.Civ.St. art. 5154c-1, be adopted, and
a proposal that a City ordinance granting firemen a fifteen (15) percent pay
increase for fiscal year 1979 be adopted, be opened and canvassed, and the
results thereof declared therefrom; and said returns having been duly canvassed,
it is found that the votes for the propositions are as follows:
Proposal Number 1:
Adoption of the state law applicable to "firefighters", which
establishes collective bargaining when a majority of the affected
employees favor representation by an employees' association and
which preserves the prohibition of strikes and lockouts and
provides penalties therefor.
FOR 4,086 VOTES
AGAINST j4,i96 VOTES
Proposal Number 2:
Firemen of the City of Lubbock, Texas, are hereby granted a
fifteen (15) percent pay increase for fiscal year 1979, said
pay increase to be computed on each fireman's base pay scale
under each said fireman's job grade held by each said fireman
on October 1, 1979, the first day of fiscal year 1979 for the
City of Lubbock, Texas, provided, however, that under no cir-
cumstances is said fifteen (15) percent pay increase for the
fiscal year 1979 to exceed fifteen (15) percent when taken in
conjunction with any other pay increase granted to firemen of
the City of Lubbock, Texas, effective at the beginning of fiscal
year 1979 for the City of Lubbock, Texas. The word fireman in
this ordinance shall mean fireman, equipment operator, fire
lieutenant, fire captain, district chief, and deputy chief.
FOR 4,634 VOTES
AGAINST 13,628 VOTES

And it further appearing that said election was duly held as provided
by law; NOW THEREFORE:
IT IS THEREFORE FOUND, DECLARED AND CERTIFIED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF LUBBOCK:
THAT a majority of the qualified voters of the City of Lubbock are
OPPOSED TO Proposal Number 1 and that a majority of the qualified
voters of the City of Lubbock are '.... oppOSrn To Proposal Number 2;
therefore it is declared that Proposal Number 1 is NULL AND VOID and that
Proposal Number 2 is NULL AND VOID_.
Passed by City Council this 24th day of January, 1980.
