RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, the training of pilots to fly gliders during World War II was a key in
America's victory in World War II; and
WHEREAS, Lubbock and the current site of Lubbock International Airport
played a key role in training pilots to fly gliders; and
WHEREAS, on August 12, 1999, the Lubbock City Council committed a 10 acre
site at Lubbock International Airport to assist the Texas Aviation Heritage Foundation,
Inc. (TAHFI) in creating a one -of -a -kind world class Texas Transportation Heritage Park
(Silent Wings Museum); and
WHEREAS, the City of Lubbock and TAHFI need grant funds assistance from
the Texas Department of Transportation Enhancement Program to make the Silent Wings
Museum a reality; and
WHEREAS, a local cash match is needed to secure said grant funds; NOW
THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK:
THAT the City of Lubbock is committed to the development, implementation,
construction, maintenance, management and financing of the Silent Wings Museum as a
one -of -a -kind world class Texas Transportation Heritage Park at Lubbock International
Airport; and
THAT the City of Lubbock will commit $600,000.00 as a local match to secure
$2,400,000.00 in Transportation Enhancement Program funds upon execution of an
acceptable grant agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation.
