WHEREAS, the citizens of Texas are needing relief from the ad valo-
rem taxes currently being assessed and collected against their real and
personal properties, and
WHEREAS, the sales tax is now being collected by the State of Texas
and
WHEREAS, a substantial number of citizens of Lubbock desire to have
alternative source of revenue for the local government, and
VTFLEREAS, the citizens of the City of Lubbock could be relieved of
approximately 40;i, of their municipal ad valorem taxes if an additional
one cent of the current sales tax were allocated to the City, and
WHEREAS, the State Legislature is presently in session and tax re-
lief measures are being considered; NOW THEREFORE:
IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK:
THAT the Texas Legislature be requested to consider allocation of
n additional one cent of the current sales tax to the various munici-
alities within the State of Texas, in order to relieve many taxpayers
f the onerous tax burdens imposed on them by the ad valorem taxes
ssessed against their real and personal properties.
THAT the City Secretary BE and is hereby requested and directed to
mail a certified copy of this resolution to each member of the Texas
Legislature representing Lubbock citizens at the current special sessi
of the Legislature of Texas, as well as the Speaker of the Honse of
Representatives and the.Lieutenant Governor of the State of Texas, and
the Governor of the State of Texas.
Passed by the City Council this 27th day of July 1978.
