CITY OF LUBBOCK APPLICANT INFORMATION Fire Fighter Selection Process There are several steps in the Fire Fighter Selection Process. This paper describes the process beginning with the completion of an Employment Appllcation and ending with the completion of Recruit Training when successful recruits become full-fledged Fire Fighters. GENERAL_ REQUIREMENTS In order to qualify for the position of Fire Fighter, interested applicants must meet the following requirements: 1. Complete an application form and submit it to the City of Lubboek Personnel Department, Room 103, City Hall, by 5 pm, April 30, 1976. 2. Be a citizen of the United States or in the process of acquisition of U. S. citizenship. 3. Be not less than 18 or more than 34 years of age. 4. Be a high school graduate or have passed the General Education Development Test, (GED) . 5. Have no Felony Convictions or numerous misdemeanor convictions of such a number that would Indicate a habitual law violator. 6. possess a Driver's License that is not in Jeopardy of suspension. If you meet the general re uirements, you will then advance to the second stage of the Selection Process- The Physical Ability Test. PHYSICAL. ABILITY TEST This test includes b events designed to determine your overall physical ability to perform the work of a Fire Fighter. Report at X our assigned time to the Fireman's Training Center Munic al Drive and Ash Avenue on Saturday. May 8. 1q76. Please Note: These tests are strenuous. If you have had a recent illness, surgery, or are under medication, ask your doctor if it is safe for you to take them. If you have any doubt about your physical ability to perform these tests, you should not attempt to take them. This is for your own safety and we -trein . We suggest that you wear some farm of ath etic footwear. Elevated footwear will not be permitted. (2) Weight Carry - The candidate will pick up a 100-pound weight shaped like the base of a ladder, carry it 25 feet without dropping or dragging it, set it down, and immediately pack it up from the opposite side and return to the starting point. Candidate will be timed. Hard Suction Hose Removal - Candidate, while standing flat footed, must first loosen one end of a section of hard suction hose that Is suspended horizontally in a rack 72" above ground like that on the side of a fire apparatus. To do this, a strap fastened around the hose with a buckle must be released. Candidate then lifts the free end of the hose from its bracket, lowers it to the waist and then returns it to its place in the bracket and reattaches the buckle. Unsuccessful candidates are disqualified. Rope Pull - This test Is a hand over hand pull of a rope with a 70-pound weight attached. Candidate will lift weight from ground to fourth floor and place weight on floor. This is a timed event. Ladder Climb - After being secured in a safety harness the candidate must climb to the top of an aerial ladder that is fully extended. Ladder will be extended over 5 story drill tower. Tap rung of ladder will be about 80' above ground. Candidate must touch top rung and return to ground. Those who do not complete this test will be disqualified. Hose Carry, Climb and Run - Candidate, dressed in a turn out coat with air tank strapped to back, will pick up a section of 2 1/2" hose and place on shoulder. The candidate will then run 100' to a building, them tip stairs to the fourth floor level, lay dawn the section of hose, pick up another one ,just like it, place on shoulder and return to starting place. Total weight carried will be around 85-pounds. This event will be timed. Hose Coupling - This test consists of 4 sections of 2 1/2 inch hose stretched between a fire hydrant and a hose nozzle. The object is to connect 2 sections of hose to hydrant and nozzle. Candidate will start half way between nozzle and hydrant, make connections at both ends and run to finish line 501 away. All connections must be hand tight. This event will also be timed. All 6 tests must be completed by candidate and times will be totalled and become part of final grade. If you successfully complete the Physical Ability portion of the Selection Process. you will then advance to the third state - The Written Test. WRITTEN TEST The written test is designed to test your ability to perform the work of a Fire Fighter. All questions on the test are multiple choice type questions. Answers are recorded on IBM type answer sheets. The test consists of 120 questions and the time allowed for the test is 1 hour and 45 minutes. The test consists of math problems, word meaning questions, general reasoning questions, reading comprehension, and mechanical aptitude questions. The yritten test Plains Fair Grounds. mock. Texas; TEST SCDRE$ ARE COMBINED The scores of applicants successfully completing bath the Physical Ability Test and the Written Test will be combined into a Final Overall Grade. The Final Overall Grade including Veteran's Preference Points will be used to establish your position on the Eligibility List (list of names of eligible app)icants) for Fife Fighter. This list will remain in effect for one year. NOTE , VETERAN'S PREFEWICE POINTS An applicant who possesses an honorable discharge from military service will receive five (5) additional points added to his or her passing grade. In order to secure credit for these points, suitable evidence of the honorable discharge must be presented to the Personnel Department at any time prior to the Written Test. Suitable evidence is a copy of the individual's Dil 214 or discharge certificate. MEDICAL EXAMINATION Pr1nr to starting Recruit School, each candid;ate is required to undergo a thorough medical examination that is provided by the City of Lubbock. I SITE RV I EW Candidates will be interviewed for the position of Fire Fighter by an interview panel based on the candidate's position on the Eligibility List. RECRUIT SCHOOL Immediately after being hired, the recruit will attend the Fire Department's Recruit School for 14 weeks. Training is mentally and physically demanding. In additlon to classroom work, practical training exercises are conducted that involves proper fire fighting techniques. After successful completion of recruit training, recruits go on shaft assignment to various stations throughout the City. After six months of services, the Fire Fighter completes his probationary service and becomes a full-fledged Civil Service Employee. PAY AND BENEFITS The current starting pay for a Probationary Fire Fighter (In Recruit School) is $854.53 per month. After six months of service the pay currently increases to a rate of $96B.53 per month. A full complement of benefits are available upon employment including medical and life insurance, retirement, sick leave, vacation, longevity pay, etc. Subject to certain limitations, work clothing is furnished including shirt, trousers, cap rubber boots. bunker coat and he)met.
