HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution - 111474E - Request To Congress To Re-Enact General Revenue Sharing - 11_14_1974P � s KJ:dw 6 �f A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO RE-ENACT GENERAL REVENUE SHARING WHEREAS, the cities of Texas have been annually receiving vitally needed fiscal assistance through General Revenue Sharing; and WHEREAS, General Revenue Sharing funds are received directly from the federal government with a minimum of federal bureaucratic red tape, which enables the cities to use their revenue sharing funds to meet the locally - determined priority needs of individual communities; and WHEREAS, local elected officials are accountable for the expenditure of revenue sharing dollars, and that accountability has resulted in increased citizen involvement in identifying the priority needs of individual communities; and WHEREAS, General Revenue Sharing has enabled the cities of Texas to provide vitally -needed services and facilities for their citizens; and WHEREAS, local citizens are severely affected by the spiraling and unprecedented rate of inflation, which is stripping them of their hard-earned ,.. income; and WHEREAS, current inflationary rates are undermining the ability of the cities to provide essential services to their citizens within reasonable and acceptable levels of local taxation; and WHEREAS, General Revenue Sharing is providing essential fiscal relief from the devastating impact of inflation; and WHEREAS, the General Revenue Sharing program, which began in 1972 will terminate in 1976 unless the 94th Congress authorized its extension; and WHEREAS, the termination of the General Revenue Sharing program would place the cities in the untenable position of either having to decrease essential community services or raise taxes; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK: THAT, the City Council endorses the continuation of General Revenue Sharing and calls for its reenactment by the 94th Congress in order to insure ... that vitally needed federal assistance will be provided to the cities of Texas; KJ:dw BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be sent to the President of the United States, Congressman George Mahon, and Senators John Tower and Lloyd Bentsen.
