for: Lubbock City Council Hearing of July 28, 1994
Honorable Mayor and Council Members,
My name is Carlton Godbold. I am founder and president of the
Godbold Cultural Center, located at 2601 19th Street.
I believe that the collection of Buddy Holly memorabilia would
be an important part of the proposed West Texas Music Museum, and
that such a museum would be a valuable addition to our community,
both as a tourist attraction and as an ongoing community resource
linking Lubbock to all of West Texas.
I would like to offer space at the Godbold Cultural Center for
such a museum, either on a temporary or permanent basis. The
Godbold center is uniquely suited for this facility, for many
reasons.
First of all, the building has a historical connection to
Buddy Holly. According to testimony from family members, Holly was
born at the family home on 6th street, then taken to the "Key
Clinic." The Avalanche Journal of Sept. 8, 1936 lists the place
of birth (perhaps erroneously) as the "Key Clinic." Shortly after
this date, the Key Clinic became the Plains Clinic and then St.
Mary's of the Plains Hospital. It is the same building which now
houses the Godbold Cultural Center: thus, it is the next best thing
to the "birthplace" of Buddy Holly.
I last appeared before you in April of 1993, to ask your
permission to build a Cultural Center on this site. The building
has been completely renovated, in accordance with all of the latest
building codes. A state-of-the-art security system is in place,
and the collections are guarded by 24 hour a day security. The
Cultural Center is now a reality. The Center has hosted well
attended art displays and music performances by contemporary
artists - local, national, and international. Tours by school
children and out-of-town visitors are an everyday occurrence.
To date, no public funds have been used. Of course, the Center
pays property taxes, state franchise taxes, & sales taxes. This
cultural center is an important paradigm of national significance,
and the West Texas Music Museum is an opportunity to prove that the
private sector can cooperate with the public sector to create
cultural assets of enduring value, at minimum cost to the taxpayer.
My offer is, quite simply, to provide the space to make a West
Texas Music Museum an immediate reality. Public funds would be
used to acquire, insure, and curate the displays.
Thank you for your time in considering my proposal. Whatever
your decision, I support keeping this collection of Buddy Holly
memorabilia in Lubbock.
