WHEREAS, Lubbock Goals! for the, Seventies sets forth.aa a goal "To honor,
to perpetuate and to increase in Lubbock that. combination of individual spirit and
feeling of community which exemplifies the best of our American heritage" as a
means of participating in the celebration of the. American Revolution LBicentennial;
and
WHEREAS, that very quality has been abundantly evident among the. citizens
of Lubbock as our city struggled during the past year to recover from one'of
history's most devastating tornadoes; "and
WHEREAS, the citizens of .Lubbock. have met adversity with courage by
authorizing, as a tornado recovery, program, the expenditure of $13, 600, 000
($7.8 million for a memorial civic center; $2.8 million for a seriess-of eight
lakes in Yeilowhouse Canyon throughout the length of the city; $1.8 million for
park improvement; and $1.2 million for a library); and
WHEREAS, concurrent federally -assisted programs are bringing about-
neighborhood redevelopment and preservation -and interpretation of the Lubbock
Lake Site, an archeological and paleontological site of the highest scientific
importance; and a $14 million airport expansion program is underway; and
WHEREAS, Texas Tech University,the new Museumof Texas- Tech Uni-
versity, and particularly the Ranch Headquarters project, with its own broad
base of citizen involvement, will participate in the celebration of the American
Revolution Bicentennial; and
WHEREAS, all of these conditions and projects combine to meet_ Lubbock's
goal of participation in the celebration of the American Revolution Bicentennial;
NOW THEREFORE: -
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK-
THAT the City Council, in'cooperation with Texas Tech University, the
Museum of Texas Tech University, the Ranch Headquarters -Association, -the
Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, Committee 70 and other'active citizens organ-
izations, will seek for our community the title "Bicentennial City of.TexasJ' and
Be. it further resolved that the City Council hereby encourages
citizens to participate actively in the celebration of our nation's2
