HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution - 2676 - Endorse Passage Of Constitutional Amendment #8 To Appear On 11_03_1987 Ballot - 10_22_1987f� r iz ja DGV:js RESOLUTION Resolution #2676 Agenda Item #35 October 22, 1987 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK, TEXAS, PRO- VIDING THAT THE CITY OF LUBBOCK, TEXAS, ENDORSES THE PASSAGE OF CONSTITU- TIONAL AMENDMENT NO. 8 APPEARING ON THE NOVEMBER 3, 1987 BALLOT; AND PROVID- ING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the prison population, in the State of Texas, may not exceed 95% of the statewide capacity; and WHEREAS, the correctional facilities within the State of Texas are ex- periencing a condition of overcrowding; and WHEREAS, there exists a need for additional correctional facilities within the Texas Department of Corrections; and WHEREAS, it is unlikely that the future prison population can be housed in facilities financed out of general revenues as done in the past; and WHEREAS, the situation can only be improved with construction of 2,250-bed maximum security facilities; NOW THEREFORE: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK: SECTION 1. THAT the City of Lubbock, Texas, hereby endorses and sup- ports the passage of Amendment No. 8 to provide for general obligation bonds to provide for additional construction of correctional facilities. SECTION 2. THAT the City of Lubbock, Texas, urges the approval of Amendment No. 8 to provide for the general obligation bonds to provide for additional construction of correctional facilities, by the voters of the State of Texas. SECTION 3. THAT this Resolution shall be come effective from and af- ter the date of its passage. Passed by the City Council on this 22nd day of October , 1987. B. C.
