In Support of The
.Designation and Construction of An
Interstate Highway
From
E1 Paso, Texas to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
WHEREAS, there exists a strong community of interest between the cities of
E1 Paso, Texas; Carlsbad and Hobbs, New Mexico; Lubbock and Wichita Falls, Texas;
Lawton and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and other intermediate cities; and
WHEREAS, there is a substantial need for an Interstate Highway connecting
such cities and other centers of population; and
WHEREAS, such a route would make available an all-weather, cross--continental
highway connecting the East Coast at Oklahoma City with the West Coast at E1 Paso,
thus alleviating congestion on existing traffic corridors; and
WHEREAS, such a route would connect military bases in Oklahoma City, Lawton,
Wichita Falls, Lubbock, Hobbs and E1 Paso with other vital military installations
through the nation; and
WHEREAS, in recognition of the innumerable advantages to the involved states
and the United States as a whole by such an Interstate Highway, the said cities of
Oklahoma City, Lawton, Wichita Falls, Lubbock, Hobbs, Carlsbad and E1 Paso by these
presents, wish to show their support for such a route and for the formation of a
planning committee therefor, to be known as the E1 Paso-Oklahoma City Interstate
Highway Committee (EPOC).
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the undersigned Lubbock City Council .
agrees in principle to the aims .and objectives of the E1 Paso-Oklahoma City Inter-
state Highway Committee (EPOC); and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that an additional Interstate Highway route connect-
ing the cities of Oklahoma City, Lawton, Wichita Falls, Lubbock, Hobbs, Carlsbad and
E1 Paso be designated at the earliest possible date as a part of any extension of the
present National System of Interstate and Defense Highways; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that early action be taken by the respective state
Highway Commissions and Engineers of Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas for the plannir;g,
designation, financing and construction of such Interstate Highway route in cooperati n
with the Bureau of Public Roads of the U. S. Department of Commerce; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that signed copies of this Resolution be distributed
to the II S. Senators of the States of Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico; to the members
of the U. S. House of Representatives along such route; to the Governors and Lt.
Governors of the States of Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico; to the members of Oklahoma
Texas and New Mexico State Legislatures along such route; to the members of the State
Highway Commissions of the States of Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico; to the members
of the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority; to the State Highway Engineers of the States of
Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico; and to all news media.
This resolution unanimously adopted and ordered placed of record by the
City Council of the City of Lubbock on the 11t' day of August, 1966.
