HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution - 2109 - Establish Sister City Program With Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico - 08_08_1985Resolution #2109 August 8, 1985 Agenda Item #35 DGV:js RESOLUTION WHEREAS, the Sister City concept was inaugurated by President Eisenhower in 1956 to establish greater friendship and understanding between peoples of the United States and other nations through the medium of direct personal contact; and WHEREAS, in the true spirit of international understanding and friend- ship the City of Lubbock, Texas and the City of Leon, Guanajuato have joined together as Sister Cities; and WHEREAS, it is anticipated that the people of our two Cities will come to know each other and will work to promote various cultural, educational, and social exchanges in order to develop a lasting friendship; and WHEREAS, we hope that by working together on the city to city level, Lubbock and Leon can help play a larger role in improving and strengthening relations between the United States of America and the Republic of Mexico; and WHEREAS, to signify Lubbock's community spirit and the commitment to the Sister City program, all expenditures for this program will be financed through private donations and contributions; NOW THEREFORE: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK: THAT, speaking on behalf of the citizens of their community, do hereby express their intent to become a Sister City and invite the people of the beautiful, progressive, and historically prominent City of Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico, to join hands of friendship with the City of Lubbock as Sister Cities, and be it further resolved that this affiliation be consummated so that both communities may benefit through mutual understanding and ever- lasting friendship which will bring the citizens of the City of Leon and the City of Lubbock a consciousness of concern for peoples in another country.
