RESOLUTION
RESOLUTION 1546 - 12/15/83
WHEREAS, Lubbock City -County Library has received a letter setting
forth a proposal to change the boundaries of the West Texas Library System;
and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Lubbock has discussed the
consequences of implementing such proposal and believes the proposal to be
ill considered because the three existing affected systems would lose
$128,533.00 for library services and that library service, particularly in
the twenty-nine county West Texas Library System, would be negatively
affected: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
THAT the City Manager be instructed to send a copy of the following
Resolution to Dr. Dorman Winfrey, the Director of the Texas State Library;
and that the City staff be instructed to send a copy of the following
Resolution to our State Senators and Representatives; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
THAT the City Council of the City of Lubbock, Texas takes strong
exceptions to the proposal by the Texas Library Staff to abolish the West
Texas Library System and the deletions of the Lubbock City -County Library
as a Major Resource Center. The City Council feels quite strongly that the
approximately 700,000 people living within the boundaries of the existing
twenty-nine counties comprising the West Texas Library System can and will
be better served with the present arrangement than through consolidation
with the Texas Panhandle System and the Texas Trans -Pecos System. There-
fore, the City Council of the City of Lubbock, Texas urgently request that
this staff proposal be rejected out of hand.
Passed this the 15th day of December 9, 1983 .
