WHEREAS the City of Lubbock purchased approximately 1400 acres
of land at a cost of 650,748.35 And made same available to the Army
Air Forces at a total rental of $1.00 per year as a site for
Lubbock Army Air Field* and purchased approximately 940 acres ad-
joining the Municipal lirport at a cost. of $71,500.00, and made this
940 acres plus the 640 acres in the Municipal Airport, available to
the Army lir Forces at a total rental of 41.00 per year as a site for
South Plains Army Air Field; the Municipal Airport and its improve-
mentd were valued at 4377,504.950 thils this, plus the purchase price
of $1220248.35 for the additional land described above, makes a total
of 4499,753.30 which the City has furnished virtually gratis to the
Government during the war, and
WHEREAS, two commercial airlines are now serving Lubbock and
the third will start se0vice in the very near future and there are a
number of airplane distributors, agents, fixed base operators aqd others
desirous of leasing space and operating from what was formerly the
Lubbock Municipal Airport (now South Plains Army Air Field) ., and as
these various activities and services are needed and desired by the
citizens of this territory and are being deprived thereof of the
majority of these activities and services because the South Plains
Army Air Field is being used as a storage base for Government planes,
'4g1ERKFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Commission of the City of
Lubbock, Texas, in regular meeting assembled, this the 8th day of
November, 1945,
1. That the Army Air Forces be requested to return that part
of South Plains Army Air Field, which was formerly the
Lubbock Municipal Airport, to the City immediately;
2. Should the first request herein be impossible to grant at
this time, then the Army Air Forces are requested to re-
move all stored planes from all runways and taxiways on
the Lubbock Municipal Airport and permit the City of
Lubbock to have full use thereof for all activities the
City may desire.
3. that the Army Air Forces or the disposing agency of the
Government handling, be requested to give the 'City of
Lubbock first chance at the purchase of all buildings and
other 'impeovements placed on the South Plains Army Air
Field by the Government.
Passed and approved by unanimous vote of the City Commission this
the 9th day of Hoyember , 1945.
