WHEREAS, current Texas law allows cities of 325,000.or greater population
to create rapid transit authorities and provides for the funding of mass tran-
sit services; and
WHEREAS, there currently exists no parallel provision for cities of the
size of the City of Lubbock; and
WHEREAS, the City of Lubbock and other cities of similar size have a need
for rapid transit services and the ability to fund such services by means of a
statutorily authorized sales tax; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Lubbock deems it to be in the
best interest of the citizens of the City of Lubbock and of other similar
cities to adopt such legislation on a local option basis; NOW THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK:
THAT the City Council of the City of Lubbock hereby gives its support to
proposed legislation that would enable cities of 50,000 or more population to
form rapid transit authorities and to fund such operations by means of a sales
tax.
