HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution - 3598 - Support - CRMWA - Salinity Control Project - 04/25/1991 (2)DGV:da RESOLUTION Resolution No. 3598 April 25, 1991 Item #20 WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Lubbock has discussed with Mr. John Williams, Canadian River Water Authority general manager, the problems associated with increasing chloride content of water obtained from the Canadian River Water Authority; and WHEREAS, the major contributor of saline water to the Canadian River System has been identified as artesian springs in the vicinity of Logan, New Mexico, by a 1984 Bureau of Reclamation study; and WHEREAS, the Bureau of Reclamation study indicates that the salt problem could be controlled by drilling one or more wells into the artesian aquifer and disposing of the brine produced into a deeper strata; and WHEREAS, federal assistance is being sought to solve the problem, but such assistance has not yet been approved; and WHEREAS, the serious nature of the problem requires action as soon as possible for the good of the citizens of all communities that are customers of the Canadian River Water Authority; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Lubbock desires that immedi- ate steps be taken to prepare a preliminary engineering evaluation of the feasibility of the salinity control project and to update the 1984 Bureau of Reclamation study; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Lubbock desires that such study be undertaken using local funding provided by the affected cities in the event that federal assistance is not promptly forthcoming; NOW THERE- FORE: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK: THAT the City Council of the City of Lubbock, Texas, hereby urges the prompt undertaking of a preliminary engineering evaluation of the feasi- bility of salinity control of the Canadian River System using local funds provided by member cities; and that in the event that federal assistance is not provided in the near future, the City Council of the City of Lubbock, Texas, encourages the pursuit of funding of the salinity control project using local funds provided by member cities. Further, the City Council of the City of Lubbock, Texas, hereby pledges its support of the salinity con- trol project to the Canadian River Water Authority to assure the safety and welfare of the citizens of the City of Lubbock and other participating mu- nicipalities.
