HomeMy WebLinkAboutResolution - 2011-R0341 - Adopt New Redistricting Plan - 07/27/2011Resolution No. 2011—R0341 July 27, 2011 Item No. 6,4 RESOLUTION (Adopting a Redistricting Plan) WHEREAS, the 2010 Census figures have been released by the Census Bureau of the United States; WHEREAS, it appears that some adjustment of City Council Districts will be required as a result of the 2010 Census data; WHEREAS, the City Council is charged with the responsibility to designate the boundaries for the City Council Districts; WHEREAS, to advise the City Council on issues pertaining to redistricting based on the newly released census data, a Redistricting Advisory Committee composed of fifteen citizens representing various elements of Lubbock's population was appointed by Resolution No. 2011-R0034; and WHEREAS, the Redistricting Advisory Committee has made its recommendation to the City Council based on the guidelines set forth in Resolution No. 2011-R0034; NOW THEREFORE: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LUBBOCK: SECTION 1. THAT the Model attached as EXHIBIT A is hereby adopted as the redistricting plan of the City of Lubbock; SECTION 2. THAT the City Attorney is directed to prepare an ordinance codifying this redistricting plan; and SECTION 3. THAT the City Attorney is directed to seek pre -clearance of the redistricting plan in accordance with Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act; and SECTION 4. THAT the City Attorney is directed to seek concurrence with the redistricting plan from the plaintiffs in that certain lawsuit styled and numbered Rev. Roy Jones, et al v. City of Lubbock, et al, Cause No. CA -5-76-34 in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, Lubbock Division. Passed by the City Council this 27th day of July, 2011.
