The City Manager or her designee is further authorized to complete and execute any routine documents required in connection therewith. In addition to Peter and the Wolf, the variations (solos) from Paquita, a technically demanding cornerstone of the classical ballet repertoire, will be staged during the first act of the Spring Production. As a collaborative project, artist Brad Parquette has been commissioned by Ballet Lubbock to create original performance artwork for the purposes of promoting the Spring Production. Committee Comments: • Project has strong artistic merit • Application indicates a good marketing plan for promoting the event outside the local area • Since the performances take place the same weekend as the Lubbock Arts Festival, the committee encourages the applicant to explore any cross promotion opportunities • Applicant plans to block some rooms at two local hotels • Application indicates that they will conduct audience surveys and collaborate with Select -a -Seat to track patron zip codes for tourism data • Cultural Arts Grant Funds recommended ($1,500) will be used towards the cost of Professional Services (Commissioned Artwork), Supplies/Materials (Costumes) and/or Promotion/Publicity 1012-002 Lubbock Arts Alliance, Inc. 33rd Annual Lubbock Arts Festival Amount Requested: $40,000 Amount Recommended: $27,000 The Lubbock Arts Alliance, Inc. requested $40,000 to assist with artist/performer fees and promotion/publicity associated with the 33rd Annual Lubbock Arts Festival at the Civic Center on April 7-10, 2011. One of the highlights of the Festival will be a "Colorful Crayola Crayon Artwork" exhibit by Herb Williams, which will include thirty pieces of contemporary sculpture made entirely from Crayola Crayons and an interactive Crayola Crayon play area where attendees can create their own pieces of crayon art. Other components of the Festival will include Masterworks Concert performances by the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, the West Texas Comic Book Convention, the Kiddie Flatland Film Festival and the launch of the new book Llano Estacado: Island in the Sky by the Texas Tech University Press. Also included will be booth artists from around the nation, demonstrating artists, Juried and Invitational Art Galleries, Children's Art Area, Young Artists and Writer's Competitions, LISD Day and the Golden Fork Culinary Competition. An outdoor concert is also being discussed, but plans are not finalized. Committee Comments: • Project has strong artistic merit • Application indicates that the number of attendees and out of town guests/tourists have been steadily increasing over the last three years with a significant increase in numbers from 2009 to 2010 • Application indicates strong corporate community support as well as other grant/foundation financial support • Application indicates a good marketing plan with a particular focus on Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma • Event has a good history of generating room nights • Cultural Arts Grant funds recommended ($27,000) will be used towards the cost for Professional Services (Artist/Performer Fees) and Promotion/Publicity 1012-003 Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts 2011 Flatland Film Series Amount Requested: $13,450 Amount Recommended: $ 8,250 The Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts requested $13,450 to fund costs associated with marketing, promotion, screening fees and artist professional stipends for the 2011 Flatland Film Series. The Series is designed to cultivate and educate audiences in the art of independent film, video and the digital moving image and will include Movie of the Month screenings in the spring, fall and winter, the 7`h Annual Flatland Film Festival and Kids First Film Festival as well as year-round classes and workshops for all ages that provide the opportunity to learn HD Video, film, script writings and telling stories. New offerings in 2011 will include a Bad Sci-Fi Film Festival in March and a Holiday Travel Movie & More Package in December. Committee Comments: • Project has strong artistic and educational merit • Application indicates a good promotion and marketing plan outside the region • Application indicates a plan to reserve room blocks at local hotels • The Holiday Travel Movie & More weekend package that is planned has good potential to generate overnight stays • Cultural Art Grant Funds recommended ($8,250) will be used toward the cost of Professional Services, Promotion/Publicity and/or Rentals (Screening Fees) • Grant funds were considered for the entire season; future applications for this timeframe may not be considered 2 1012-004 Lubbock Moonlight Musicals, Inc. Lubbock Moonlight Musicals 2011 Season Amount Requested: $35,000 Amount Recommended: $27,000 Lubbock Moonlight Musicals requested $35,000 to assist with the professional artist fees, young musical artist stipends and script rentals/royalties associated with the Lubbock Moonlight Musicals 2011 Season. The season will feature four family-oriented musicals to be presented throughout the summer of 2011 at the Wells Fargo Amphitheatre. The shows planned, which will include a live orchestra of 30 professional musicians, are Annie (eight performances), Beauty and the Beast (eight performances), South Pacific (six performances, and Buddy! The Buddy Holly Story (four performances). The performances will feature local artistic talent, music theatre students and faculty from the Texas Tech University College of Visual and Performing Arts and high school students from Lubbock ISD, Lubbock Cooper ISD, and Frenship ISD. Committee Comments: • Project has strong artistic merit and strong educational value to the students who participate in the productions • Application indicates that Visit Lubbock has been utilized as a primary marketing consultant to help develop audiences from outside the local area • Project has the potential to attract bus tour groups and/or visitors that may be on their way to or from attending the outdoor musical in Palo Duro Canyon • Cultural Arts Grant funds recommended ($27,000) will be used towards the cost of Professional Artist Fees, Young Musical Artist Stipends and/or Rentals (Scripts and Royalties) 1012-005 Lubbock Arts Alliance The Maines Brothers Band: Live in Lubbock's Cultural District Amount Requested: $15,000 Amount Recommended: $ 7,500 The Lubbock Arts Alliance requested $15,000 for professional services associated with producing a concert, The Maines Brothers Band: Live in Lubbock's Cultural District, at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center on August 13, 2011. This project seeks to further develop Lubbock's Cultural District as an arts destination by celebrating the legacy of local artists who have made an impact on the national music scene. All of the original members of The Maines Brothers Band will be performing. In addition, The Crossroads of Music Archive at the Southwest Collection at Texas Tech University will have a special exhibit "Lubbock: The Music Crossroads of Texas" featuring the history of the Maines family as well as other musicians and promoters who have made an impact on Lubbock's rich musical history. Committee Comments: 0 Project has strong artistic merit • Project has good potential for tourism as The Maines Brothers Band does not reunite to perform that often and they have fans well beyond the Lubbock area • Application indicates a good plan for marketing outside the region • Applicant plans to block rooms at a local hotel • Cultural Arts Grant funds recommended ($7,500) will be used towards the cost of Professional Services (Performer Fees) 1012-006 Broadway Festivals, Inc. 20114th on Broadway Celebration Amount Requested: $40,000 Amount Recommended: $25,000 Broadway Festivals requested $40,000 for the "2011 4th on Broadway Celebration" to be held on July 2 and July 4, 2010. The theme for the 2011 4th on Broadway will celebrate and honor the troops that have and continue to serve and protect the nation. The 4th Annual Street Dance will be held on July 2"d. On July 4th, the activities will include the Parade, the Street Fair featuring over 400 regional performers on various stages, the College Baseball Hall of Fame Fan Fest, the Evening Concert and Fireworks. Committee Comments: • The music components of the project reflect strong artistic merit • Since there is a day in between with no activity, the applicant is strongly encouraged to creatively market the event to encourage visitors to take advantage of the July 2nd and July 4th activities. Applicant might explore creating a weekend package that includes hotel and tickets to the Street Dance and Premier Seating for the Evening Concert • Applicant continues to have a marketing committee with staff members from Visit Lubbock serving on the committee • Application indicates a good marketing plan to reach potential visitors • Cultural Arts Grant Funds recommended ($25,000) will be used toward the cost of Professional Services (Music/Performer Fees), Advertising, and/or Postage 1012-007 Lubbock Community Theatre Lubbock Community Theatre Spring Season 2011 Amount Requested: $ 8,250 Amount Recommended: $ 4,029 The Lubbock Community Theatre requested $8,250 to assist with the promotion of the spring season of plays. Performances, totaling twenty-seven, include 2 season productions and one children's production. These performances will take place at the Boston Avenue Theatre on various dates between March 1 and September 1, 2011. Committee Comments: • Project has strong artistic merit 11 • Applicant indicates that they will continue to place postcards/flyers in local hotels to help promote the performances to visitors; the Committee would ask that the applicant include the results of this marketing effort in the Evaluation Report when the project is completed, i.e. how many flyers/postcards were distributed to hotels and a list of those hotels • Applicant plans to list performances on the Visit Lubbock website and other tourism websites • Applicant has created an audience survey form to help track out of town attendees; their new ticketing system will also help track visitor information • Cultural Arts Grant funds recommended ($4,029) will be used towards the cost of Promotion/Publicity 1012-008 Lubbock Centro Aztlan/Ballet Folklorico Aztlan Viva Aztlan Festival 2011 Amount Requested: $10,000 Amount Recommended: $ 6,000 Lubbock Centro Aztlan requested $10,000 to produce the Viva Aztlan Festival which will be held March 11-12, 2011 at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center. The two-day Festival consists of Mexican folklore dance groups competing and participating in workshops as well as Mariachi groups. Folklorico groups are invited from all over the nation to compete and display their artistry and traditions of Mexico through dance. Participants include adults and children. Master Instructors are brought in to conduct the workshops and judge the competitions. The Festival will also include a Mariachi competition and a concert featuring nationally acclaimed Mariachi group Mariachi Los Arrieros from El Paso and last year's competition winner, Edinburg Parks and Recreation Dance Team, will perform for the Friday night showcase. Committee Comments: • Project has strong artistic and educational merit • Application indicates a significant decline in attendance for the 2010 event however this was attributed to the economy and the death of the founder, which put the planning for the 2010 event behind schedule. The application indicates that the numbers should increase for the 2011 event. The Committee encourages the applicant to evaluate what can be done to insure that the projected attendance is realized and bring the attendance numbers back up to prior levels • Websites that specifically cater to Folklorico and Mariachi groups will be utilized to promote the Festival on their event calendars; good potential to generate participation and tourism. • Cultural Arts Grant funds recommended ($6,000) will be used towards the cost of Professional Services (Mariachi Concert and Folklorico Showcase artist fees) and/or Promotion/Publicity 5 1012-009 University Interscholastic League — TTU Under the Stars: Texas Tech UIL Summer Theatre Camp Amount Requested: $14,000 Amount Recommended: $ 6,000 The University Interscholastic League-TTU requested $14,000 to assist with costs associated with the Under the Stars: Texas Tech UIL Summer Theatre Camp in July of 2011. This is the second year that UIL will host a Summer Theatre Camp. The Camp will be marketed to all high schools in the state of Texas and through a booth at the Texas Educational Theatre Association Conference. The funds requested will be used to secure highly qualified instructors (Directors) for the Camp. Committee Comments: • Project has strong artistic and educational merit • Project has good potential for generating room nights as the event grows • Application indicates that the final performances by the students should bring in family members from around the state; good potential for tourism and overnight stays • Applicant has blocked rooms at two local hotels • Cultural Arts Grant funds recommended ($6,000) will be used towards the cost of Professional Services (Camp Directors) 1012-010 University Interscholastic League — TTU UIL Region 15A One -Act Play Competition Amount Requested: $ 5,150 Amount Recommended: $ 2,600 The University Interscholastic League-TTU requested $5,150 to assist with costs associated with hosting the UIL Region 1 - 5A One -Act Play Competition that will be held April 11-12, 2011. The competition targets the student thespians in 5A schools with the hopes of advancing to the State Competition. UIL expects 350 visitors including 100 competitors to come to Lubbock for the competition. Region 1 consists of cities from El Paso to McKinney and from Amarillo to Junction.
