any aspect of the City Special Sales Tax Election held on November 4,
2003. Approximately 275 election workers (citizens and employees)

This item was considered following Item 3.
Elections in the City of Lubbock require the participation of many people.
The facilitation and quality of our elections depend on the volunteer
efforts of concerned, caring citizens and employees. An election of the
magnitude of the City of Lubbock elections would not be possible without
the involvement and commitment of these parties. We have eight early
voting locations where early voting was conducted for a period of twelve
(12) days. During the early voting period, approximately 18 citizens
assisted the City by serving as Temporary Early Voting Clerks. After the
early voting period ended, a group of citizens met and provided service on
the ballot board.
We have 54 Election Day polling locations, and approximately 216
citizens worked at these sites. Approximately 35 City employees assisted
Election night at the Courthouse.
In addition, the Facilities Management Department plays a major role in
an election with the delivery/pickup of election tables, chairs, voting
booths, combination forms; installation of specific locks at South Plains
Mall, Albertsons, and City Hall; assisting the Ballot Board Judge with
delivery of the early voting ballot boxes to the Courthouse; transporting
ballot boxes and voting booths on election night from the Courthouse to
916 Main; and transporting all election equipment back to City Hall after
the election on election night.
City Secretary staff spends numerous weekend and evening hours
coordinating people, locations, equipment, supplies, and training; entering
early voting data; and performing many other physical and mental tasks.
City Secretary Rebecca Garza recognized City Secretary staff, Facilities
Management staff, other City staff volunteers, Early Voting Clerks,
Election Day Judges, Alternate Judges, and Clerks that assisted with any
aspect of the City Special Sales Tax Election held on November 4, 2003.
Mayor McDougal read a special recognition and expressed Council's
appreciation to Ms. Garza and the other election workers.
