BROADVIEW COTTON GIN CO., INC.
May 4, 1965
Honorable Mayor
City of Lubbock
Lubbock, Texas
ATTENTION: John Hickerson
Dear Sir:
I am making request for fire protection in connection with my property and gin located on the
Clovis Highway, in the Northwest part of the city.
My need for fire protection is great and needless to say it has been costin[; hundreds of
additional dollars each year without it, and of course I have paid city taxes the past six or
seven years, since annexed to the city, in addition.
It would seem that we are within a reasonable distance of a main line and it will doubtless be
a long time before this area is built up. However, your investigating the feasibility of providing
protection for our property in6rder that we might realize some direct benefits from the annexing
and the taxes will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for your consideration, I remain
- — =1 Sincerely,

to extend fire protection service to the Northwest corner of the Broadview Gin provided the
gin plats their property and pays their water pro rats.

WESTERN LITTLE LEAGUE & PONY LEAGUE
May 7, 1965
Mr. William J. Pitstick
City Manager
City of Lubbock
Lubbock, Texas
Dear Mr. Pitstick:
It is our understanding that our request to light Elks Little League Baseball Park was tabled
by the City Council at its last regular meeting. As you know, our playing season starts in
about three weeks. Therefore, we need some decision on the request as soon as possible so that
we can make our plans accordingly.
In a recent meeting of the Board of Directors of the League, it was decided to immediately
proceed with plans to light the park in order to accommodate the heavy demand for playing
facilities this coming season. As a result, the League has placed an order with a local
distributor for the necessary incandescent lighting fixtures; and estimates have been prepared
for their proper installation. If we do not receive favorable support from the City, funds
will be borrowed or solicited for the payment of the fixtures and installation charges.
One way or the other, Elks Field will be lighted for this year's scheduled games. It was felt
that the field was absolutely needed in our program. It would appear that Western Little League
and the City Council are trying ultimately to accomplish the same objective. There -seems to be
no doubt that both groups have an obligation to provide playing facilities for the youth of
Lubbock. We are asking the City of Lubbock to lend their support to our program so that this
objective can be accomplished.
Respectfully submitted,
C. J. Jordan, President
The City Council considered the above letter from Western Little League as to improvements at
the Elks Lodge located at 3045 Slide Road and it was unanimously agreed to take this request under
advisement.

The Director of Public Works gave the following report to the City Council in connection with
(33)
softening of the Canadian River Water:
"
A report was given to the City Council that because of the reduced cost of the Canadian River
Project the amount which the City will be paying for Canadian River Water will be reduced by 2.25
cents and the reduced treatment plant cost has reduced the treatment cost of the water by 'k cent
per thousand gallons. The council also considered the possible partial softening of the Canadian
River Water which is estimated to cost an average of 1.4 cents per thousand gallons, and their
action was that they favor partial softening to eliminate the variations of hardness of the
Canadian River Water. Also the citizens of the City of Lubbock have indicated in the past that
they favor such softening by approving a bond issue in the amount of $650,000. Of recent date
many citizens stated they sincerely hoped that the representatives from the other cities will also
'
favor this action. It is estimated that it will cost an additional $150,000 to provide for
this softening in additional Treatment Plant cost.
Motion was then made by Councilman Simpson, seconded by Councilman Kastman, motion carried,
Mayor Tidmore and Councilmen Alderson, Kastman, Simpson, and Medlock voting Yea, none voting Nay,
to accept and approve the report as set out above.
