A request for the City Council to make application for a neighborhood facilities grant to enlarge the park site adjacent to Parkway Elementary School. t-31-458-1133 For some time, the City Council and the Park and Recreation Board have been considering a re- (9a) quest that a neighborhood center be provided for the residents of the Chris Harwell area. On September 14, the Council authorized the Park and Recreation Board to proceed with construction plans " . . . provided that adequate land may be obtained from the Lubbock Independent School District -for this purpose". It was the thinking at that time that the center should be built on.the Chris, Harwell school grounds since the adjacent, park site was too small to accomodate this facility. The School Board recently considered this matter and decided they preferred that the proposed building be constructed -on the adjacent park property. The School Board did agree, however, to grant to the,City of Lubbock a 50 foot easement along the entire length of the eastern boundary of the school property on which could be constructed an access road to the building, parking facilities, and landscaped grounds. This will provide sufficient land to allow construction of the neighborhood center on the park property. After the easement legal papers are prepared and more detailed plans for the building and the park are completed, this item will be placed on the Council agenda for formal action.
