Memo to the Lubbock City Council "U-Can" has been organized for the purpose of aiding in minimizing the waste problems of the community of Lubbock. U-Can has an application now pending to become a non-profit corporation subject to approval by the Secretary of State, Mr. Bob Bullock. At present our objective is to salvage usable metal +from what is presently "trash" and in so doing to lengthen the life of Lubbock's sanitary landfill and to supplement the city income. In order to carry out this objective, U-Can needs receptacles for metal to be placed at various collection points throughtout the City. The owners of the following shopping centers have indicated that they would be willing to place such receptacles on their location W Ll F1 Fol 1. Redbud Shopping Center on Slide Road 2. Parkway Shopping Center at Quirt & 84th 3. Furr's Family Center at 34th & Quaker 4. Vacant lot between Town & Country Shopping Center and the miniature Golf Course at 4th & University 5. Gibson's Shopping Center at Avenue H 6. Caprock Center at 50th & Boston Pre -arranged, regular pick-up service for these receptacles would need to be made. N-Can intends to carry out a widely publicized camp#ign encouraging the continuation of a much -deserved pride in our City of Lubbock through public service advertisement on radio, T. .V , newspaper; by multiple speaking engagements with the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Women's Club, Women's Chamber of,Commerce, the city's churches, and other service organizations as well as through educational material bo-be distributed to the Lubbock Independent School District. U-Can requests the Lubbock City Council's approval for the leasing to U-Can of one (1) to sixty (60) Dumpsters, now being phased -out of current sanitation operation, and of one truck with operating hoisting equipment, to be phased out of current sanitation operations on or around February 15, 1972, for the sum of $1.00 per year. (After six month's operations, evaluation of the feasibility of such salvage of metal would be made.) U-Can agrees that it should carry insurnace coverage for liability on the Dumpsters and truck with hoisting device used in this project as well as on the driver of the truck during the time when he is on -this -Job. Revenue from, the sale of the metal (priced currently at 60¢ per hundred weight and saleable at Lubbock American Iron and Metal) collected will be used to defray the expenses of collection the filing fee for non-profit incorporation with the remainder, if any-- hopefully with a campaign using principally volunteer workers there will be some remaining funds, but we won't know the possibility here until we've.tried it --going to the City of Lubbock's sanitation collection.
