Mrs. Ed Jones, Mrs. Thomas.
The bus line that previously served this area having been changed to fiend bus service to
Baylor Apartments and Canyon View Apartments in North Lubbock. After discussion in regard to
the new bus schedule, it was brought out that the residents do not receive bus service as early,
or after 7:30-P.M:, also that it is necessary to travel several blocks to the bus line and that
the bus sloes not run as often as the previous bus did; that school children riding the bus have
to ride the bus over the long route before reaching school, making them late for certain pre-
school meetings, also that the school children have to change buses down town to reach some of
the schools. A petition, bearing 212 names, was presented to the City Commission in regard to
bus service in this area, the petition reading:
"We the undersigned residents of the City of Lubbock want to west of you not to let
the City Bus Company discontinue service in our sedtion of town (being the bus route
from 4th Street South on Avenue E to Eighth and then back North to 4th Street on Avenue C)
The proposed discontinuance will work an undue hardship on several school children who
regularly ride the bus to school and back and on several working people who ride the bus
to work and back. We request the bus service to continue as it is at present."
After considering all facts presented in regard to bus service in the above ment:.oned area, it
was unanimously agreed by the City Commission to tequest the bus company to restore bus service
to the area.
There was further consideration given the problem of serving Lubbock with Bus Service, and it
was unanimously agreed to request the Traffic Commission to give consideration to the establish-
ment of a Master Plan for furnishing Bus Service to all areas within the City of Lubbock, with
a view of it not being necessary to make frequent changes in the routes of established bus lines.
There was discussion of natural Lake Areas west of Lubbock Citjy Limits and South of West 19th
Street being filled in, which, in the opinion of'the City Engineer, will cause overflow of flood
water from heavy rains to'cause serious flood damage to the areas East and Sou#h of such filled -
in lake areas; particularly since the natural flow of water in this area is from the Southwest
to the Northeast. It was suggested in the meeting that the City Engineering Department give
consideration to the construction of dikes bordering the City Limits as a protection against such
flood waters that might cause damage within the City Limits by such natural water basins being
filled in. After this discussion, motion was made by Commissioner Hufstedler, seconded y Com-
missioner Thomas motion carried, Mayor Whiteside and Commissioners Hufstedler, Davis, and Thomas
voting YEA, none voting NAY, the City Engineering Department and City Attorney were instructed
to make further investigation in regard to these natural water basins being filled in, together
with the consequences to be suffered in the City of Lubbock caused from such fill-ins, and make
report of their findings back to the City Commission.
