Motion by CommissionerV&iteside„ seconded by Commissioner Hufstedle;,carried
unanimously, to authorize the Mayor to write letter as follows to Pioneer
Air Lines, of Houston, Texas.
March 24, 1949
Mr. Robert J. Smith, President
Pioneer Airlines
Houston, Texas
Dear General Smith:
It has come to the attention of the City of Lubbock that Pioneer
Airlines' lease for hangar and general office facilities at the Houston
Municipal Airport has been, or will be, cancelled, Knowing that the
aeronautical facilities at Houston are overcrowded, and in an endeavor
to assist you in finding adequate quarters and space at a centrally lo-
cated point on your airline system, the City Commission has authorized
me to extend to you an offer of certain facilities.
The City of Lubbock has acquired title to the former Army im-
provements located on the east side of the Lubbock Municipal Airport
and is in a position to offer to you Hangar Building No. T-310. This
building is one hundred forty-one feet and six inches (14116") wide
and two hundred feet ( 200' ) lon It has a door opening thirty-six
feet and one and one-half (36'1") high, and has a clear floor area in
excess of twenty-eight thousand two hundred (28,2001 square feet. This
building has a lean-to on the west or ramp side, and on the east side.
These lean-tos incorporate four thousand (4,000) square feet of floor
space on each side of the hangar, and are divided into individual shops
that have been used in the past for radio repair, instrument repair,
hydraulics, engine overhaul, propeller shop, etc.
The second floor has a total of eight thousand (8,000) square
feet of office space. The building is heated by an oil -fired steam
heating plant.
3-24-49 Robert J. Smith page 2
In addition to the hangar we have buildings and facilities immediately
adjacent to the hangar that will provide storage, shop, and office space,
together with adequate airplane and automobile parking, and utility ser-
vices.
The City of Lubbock will be very happy to offer to you the hangar
facilities on a long-term rental basis at a rental rate of Two Hundred
Seventy-five Dollars per month; and in order to help defray the cost of
moving, is wilting to rebate the first two (2) years' rental. In the
event your certificate should not be extended or made permanent and your
routes should be Ebandoned the lease could be cancelled at that time with-
out penalty. If you need additional apace for storage, shops or offices
we would be happy to work out a plan with you.
/We believe that the location of Pioneer Airlines at a central point
on your system will reduce operating costs and will provide the on-line
maintenance so successful with the older trans -continental carriers. We
believe that you will find Lubbock the most progressive andmost air -minded
city in the West. Our rapid growth and the increase in air traffic into
and out of Lubbock will justify these statements.
Vie assure you that we want to do everything possible to assist you
in continuing Pioneer's outstanding record of service in the West.
Sincerely yours,
W. H. Rodgers,
Mayor
