H. Williams, Manager of S. E. Cone Grain and Seed Company of Lubbock, Texas, in regard to personal tax on this business: April 15, 1952 Mr. Steve Matthews, City Manager % City Hall Lubbock, Texas Gentlemen: With reference to our 1951 Personal Tax for S. E. Cone Grain & Seed Company, Inc. i,,re rendered i30,000 valuation. We received a notice from the Board of Equalization on July 26, 1951, to appear before this court on August 7, 1951, to show why these taxes should not be raised from -w25,000.00 to $50,000.00. We wrote a lbtter on July 31, 1951 to the Board of Equalization stetting that these Tax was rendered at $30,000.00 instead of 14"25,000.00 and that we would object to their being raised to v50,000.00 as basis of $50,000.00 taxable property on 66 2/3 per cent would reflect about w70,000.00 valuation. J We herewith qubmit statement showing our actual book value representing actual cost of all Personal Property, and allowed $20,000.00 for Grain Stock owned by us which is self explanatory. We also are enclosing you our•check covering 430,000.00 valuation at $1.50 rate making a total of 450.00 adding 10 penalty of $n45.p0 mak7Ylg a total amount.of check 495.00. We ask that you run this letter and settlement through the proper channels and if not accepted by the Board to advise us as to what proqedure you require us.to go through. It is not our desire not to pay our proper taxes; but we do not wish to be imposed on unjustly. We had much rather they request an outright donation and we feel like if you will compare our tax paid on the. Cone Grain property and equipment with other similar business in town, for an example, we would suggest you compare it with Burrus Elevator Tax -record., as we understand their valuation is much lower compared to ours. Our plant is just a Grain Elevator and warehouse. We are not a mix feed plant and do not manufacture any kind of mixed feeds, so we would not have any mixing equipment to render. Yours very truly, S.
