homes located here. Rev. Cleveland also stated that there is a)...question in their minds as to
whether or not citizens in this area were given proper-,',y notice. He requested the City Council

Honorable Mayor Granberry
Councilmen
City Officials and
All Concerned PETITION
Approximately Thursday May 20; 1971, landscaping was begun on land bounded by 19th Street, 20th
Street, Birch and Ash Avenue for the erection of private'and/or-public warehouses. This very
un-pleasant structure will surround the Greater New Hope Baptist Church And the Twentieth and
Birch Street Church of Christ, As well'as the beautifully structured homes in the community,
this of course needless to say will be very undesirable to both of our congreagations plus home
owners in this area. A number -of years ago this land was acquired from "Home Owners" by the
City i of Lubbock Urban Renewal Agency and supposedly rezoned for a proposed shopping center that
never materialized. We are quire concerned "HOW and WHY" the instant zone change, why tax -payers
and citizens of East Lubbock are not informed of-instand'.plant to re -zone in the Black Community
and how the act is generally used to place these very UNDESIRABLE and UNPLEASANT structures east
of Avenue A. A public or private warehouse constructed in this designated place would definitely
.be degrading to our homes aiid'religious institutions as well. This petition comes to you as
our formal complaint of same. Any and all consideration given this matter would be greatly
appreciated by all. Signatures of protest are attached, please feel free to contact any that
yousodesire.

receive notice of this Zoning Hearing. Mr. Woods stated that he owns property in this area,;.,
however, he does not live in this area. Mr. N. P. Holmes also appeared in opposition to ware-
houses being constructed at,this location. The City Couciil instructed the City Secretary to
have this item on the City Council agenda for June 10, 1971. ,
NO FURTHER BUSINESS COMING UP FOR CONSIDERATION, THE CITY COUNCIL ADJOURNED FROM
