This site located immediately south of Hardwick School between Chicago and Dover Avenues and 15th and 16th Streets, consist of approximately four acres of land and will be purchased for approximately $40,000. Action on this item was deferred until February 11, 1971, because a full Council was not present at this meeting. 71-30-28-75 Mr. Dirk West, a member of the Park and Recreation Board, appeared before the City Council and (8) presented the following recommendations for a name change for Comanche Canyon Park. December 17, 1970 Mayor James H. Granberry Members of the City Council Members of the Park Board City Hall Lubbock, Texas Gentlemen: In deference to historical tradition and accuracy, we suggest that consideration be given the name "Comanche Canyon Park". We have no objection to calling it "Comanche Park", or "Comanche Park on Yellow House Canyon", but we do have reservations about changing the name of the Canyon. This is tampering with something which has been fixed for three centuries of oral and written usage. The Spaniards named it Canon De Casas Amarillas and it is so listed on early Spanish maps and in Spanish records. General Mackenzie anglicized the name and listed the stream as Yellow House Canyon. It has been so known in all literary and historical accounts and maps since 1874. It is so designated on the official State Highway maps to this day. Events and episodes identified with this stream under its historic name would fill a book. In view of the fact there is a possibility of starting development of the Lubbock Lake Site soon, we suggest this would be a propitious time to correct the situation before contracts and various legal documents conspire to perpetuate the new nomenclature.
